Swing Set Photograph
This photograph is strongest in terms of composition. The lines in the photograph make the photograph dynamic because they act as leading lines, moving the viewers eyes through the photograph. It also has strong pattern and repetition in the monkey bars that are repeated in the center of the photograph. This repetition also creates a sense of movement in the image. There is also depth in the photo in terms of foreground, middle ground, and background. A sense of space in also created in the photo. The monkey bars act as the main element in the foreground, stairs and the tire swing act as the middle ground, and the grass behind the swing set acts as the background. As a viewer your eyes move between these objects creating movement. The angle of the photograph also makes the photograph dynamic. Because the photo was not taken straight on the viewer is forced to have a new perspective on a common object. The triangular shapes that are created by camera position created dynamic angles.
Leaf Photograph
The sense of mystery that is created by this photograph makes it strong. This mood is created by the depth of field and by the shadow that is created. In order to take this picture a small depth of field was used so that the object being photographed remained in focus while the rest of the image was blurred This technique creates a mysterious mood because the single leaf with no subtext poses the question, why? The depth of field used also creates a sense of positive and negative space because the subject matter acts the the positive space and the blurred background acts as the negative space. Also, the proximity of the leaf allows many details to be seen. The best of these details is the texture of the leaf. Viewers can see the lines in the leaf and feel inclined to reach into the photo and touch the subject matter.
Typewriter Photograph
This image plays with scale, distance, and color that makes for an interesting point of view. The photograph was taken in black and white to enhance the contrast of the image. The picture has both very light aspects and also has very dark aspects. The contrast in the image creates a visually interesting photograph. The proximity to the subject matter plays with the concept of scale. The image is of the keys on a typewriter which are relatively small. However, because the camera was so close to the subject matter when the photo was taken the small keys appear to be much larger than they really are. The play on scale makes it almost as though the viewer is looking at subject matter as a giant object in a small world making a very compelling point of view. The lack of depth in this photo is actually a positive aspect. The viewer is forced to focus on the unusual subject matter rather than focusing on other outside subjects in the image. The circular shapes of the keys along with the vertical lines in the photo lead the viewers eyes through the photograph so nothing in the composition goes unseen.
Zip Line Photograph
The picture is picture that conveys motion. The technique used to create the image is panning where the photographer follows the moving subject matter. This causes the subject matter, in this case the girl, to be in focus while the rest of the image is blurry. In order to create this effect a longer shutter speed also has to be used to be able to capture the motion in action. When viewing this photo is looks almost as though you are the subject matter because the viewer is seeing what the moving object is seeing, a blurry surrounding. Due to this the viewers eye also moves through the photo because they expect to continue moving through it. The colors in the image also make it visually interesting, The vivid pink in the shirt of the child contrast with the green in the grass making the subject matter stick out even more than had by being in focus.
Sculpture Photograph
This photograph uses distance, shadows, contrast, and positive versus negative space to create a visually dynamic image. The lines in the photo create positive space in the sticks used to make the sculpture and the shapes created by the sticks are the negative space. This moves the viewers eye through the picture. Also, the shadows created by the sculpture create a mood that is relevant to the observer. Although the feelings that the photo provokes in viewers may be different, it is certain the some kind type of emotion is felt when looking at the image. In addition to this the black and white colors in the photo create a lot of contrast and make the shadows show even more profoundly. The distance at which the photo was taken also creates to the sense of mood. Without being told a viewer may not be able to figure out what the image if of because only a portion of the sculpture is showing. This makes the photo mysterious along with all the other emotions the photograph provokes.
Stairs Photograph
The point of view of this photo creates all the other compositional aspects. The photo has a lot of leading lines in the railing and in the stairs themselves that lead the viewers eye through the image. Due to the point of view of the photo, depth is also created because there is a sense of foreground, middle ground, and background. One of the best parts of the photo has nothing to do with the subject matter is the creation of triangular shapes that act as a sort of frame. The lines in this photo also creates pattern and rhythm. The lines repeat throughout the photograph. This adds to the movement of the picture as the viewers eye is drawn around the leading lines and down or across the different patterns.
